Shangri La Dinner and Mah Jong Evening

A great night was had by all who attended dinner at the Shangri La Restaurant in South Dunedin on Monday 23rd June. Dinner for many was followed by a night playing mah jong upstairs. The aim of this event was to get together many of the senior members of our community and it was a full house of 73. The Otago Southland Chinese Association paid for supper for the players and also gave spot prizes during the dinner.

It was an Otago Southland Chinese Association event, but credit goes to Mrs Wai Lin Wong (my Mum) who dreamed up the idea of having the dinner and finishing off with mah jong and supper. For many years we’ve talked about getting senior members together for a mah jong evening but no such event has eventuated till now. Wai Lin, an ex committee member from the 1970s is a regular customer at the restaurant and collaborated with Phillip Loo, father of restaurant owner Jason Loo who was very keen to host an event. Combining two of the things Chinese people love the most – food and mah jong proved to be a winner.

In addition Wai Lin contributed one of the dishes – chicken with jellied fish. Thanks also to Mrs Nancy Wong for donating the spring onions.

If you want to do this again or missed out, we’ll be planning another evening later in the year.
