Chinese New Year Dinner 2013

Saturday 9 February, 2013
By Gordon Wong

The Chinese New Year dinner welcoming the Year of the Snake was held at the Golden Harvest Restaurant. The dinner this year was relatively low key with customary great food and many friends reunited.

Proceedings began with a dynamic lion dance performance by the OSCA Lion Dance team that featured a duel between the adult and juvenile lions (see pictures below).  The fantastic ticket sales, mostly by word of mouth, packed the restaurant and unfortunately this meant the lions were not able move between tables to get up close to the dinner guests.

The dinner is essentially a social occasion for OSCA members and non members, with a fund raising purpose.  This year a large proportion of funds raised from raffles were donated to the family of Chris He via a fund organised by Teresa Chan Law. Dr Chris He was tragically killed in an accident outside the Dunedin Hospital while cycling along the one-way system going North on 20 November 2012.  He left behind a wife and two young children, both under 2 years of age. . Individual OSCA members have donated a total of $650 to Dr He’s family previously. The raffles raised further funds and OSCA topped up the amount to $850.

Thank you to the people who attended this year. We very much appreciate that many of you and your friends support this dinner annually. I trust you had a nice time and we’ll see you again next year to welcome the Year of the Horse.
