OSCA Chinese New Year Dinner 2011

Golden Harvest Restaurant
Saturday 12 February 2011

The OSCA Chinese New Year Dinner was held once again at the Golden Harvest Restaurant.  Linus Chin the President of OSCA pointed out that we are grateful for the support of the many familiar faces who faithfully attend Chinese New Year and August Moon dinners, year after year.

Malcolm Wong the Chairman of the Dunedin Chinese Garden was invited to speak in response to recent negative press regarding the garden losing money.  His main message was that the Garden is a special place that serves as a memorial to the important contributions that Chinese people past and present have made and continue to make in New Zealand.

Nicolle Wong and Laura Sew Hoy spoke briefly to invite everyone to support the New Zealand Chinese Association Sports Tournament to be held in Dunedin this Easter.  Nicolle and Laura are Co-Tournament Controllers.  More details regarding the tournament can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.

The nature of these dinners is generally low key, a good opportunity for people to catch up with old friends.  Prior to dinner, we were treated to the Lion Dance, with two lions performed by the very young OSCA crew, made up of local university and high school students.  Chinese New Year normally occurs before out of town students return to Dunedin, so we are very grateful for the magnificent efforts of our local members.

Fund raising for the sports tournament included two sets of raffles.  Again, it was our young local members who worked very hard cajoling the diners to buy tickets.  Thanks very much to Golden Harvest Restaurant for donating two Peking Duck meals that were auctioned during the dinner by our own MC, the very dry James Chin.

See you all again at August Moon!!
