Once every year New Zealand holds the NZCA sports tournament and this year Otago had the privilege of holding it in “Sunny” Dunedin. After long and sleepless nights from Frances, Nicolle and Laura, the event that most Chinese people in New Zealand look forward to had awakened. On Friday 22nd of April the Easter weekend kicked off with the cultural concert at the Dunedin Town hall.

This concert consisted of a lion dance performance from the professional local lion dance team. The team decided to show off their wide range of talent with three energetic lions and a clown this year. Due to popular demand the two time NZCA dance champions performed their most likely last dance together, as usual the dance crew created a few laughs with their ridiculously good looking guys and fresh looking girls.

One of the main highlights of the cultural concert was getting to experience the traditional Chinese dances performed by the Southland. Their three acts really brought out the CULTURE in the whole concert and that’s what it was all about.

The concert was not just South Island based, the Wellingtonians provided us with a sexy hip-hop piece with four of the Welly girls. Their spectacular performance sure made the guys wolf whistle and cheer extra loudly.

OSCA Winners of all Tennis Divisions
This concert was not just a big dance performance, two of OSCA’s noob basketball players, Andrew Yee and Richmond King show us something that they are really good at. Entering a short film about “the life of an Asian scarfy” showed the rest of the Chinese people in New Zealand how to really party. Unlike the students that live in St Margret’s college, who study on a Saturday night and have no social life. OSCA scarfies get together and share a 6 pack of beer between ten people and get WASTED!!. This film also show cased a Kobe Bryant wannabe aka Colin Chin. Colin will miss a lay-up, “I’m Kobe!”, Colin will get blocked, “I’m Kobe!”, Colin will get his ankles broken, “I’m Kobe!”. Man someone has to bring this guy back to reality.

Another highlight in the cultural concert was the music section, getting to experience the speedy fingers of Gab Smith and Kenny Kim strumming on their guitars was really music to our ears. This was followed by an Acapella performance by OSCA’s “so you think you can sing” group. An Acapella is vocal music or singing without instrumental accompaniment. With a mixture of songs the performance was dedicated to Mumma sexy Wong (Frances Wong) for all her hard work she put into the Easter weekend.

OSCA Tiniball Winners
Last but not least the final act, inspired by the Selwyn Ballet. OSCA performed for the first time ever a ballet piece choreographed by Laura Sew Hoy. With a group of nine guys in short little tutus, this performance got all the girls and some of the guys drooling.

With approximately 474 participants and supporters this year, OSCA sure had their hands full. The sports results on the right…
After hard days of competitive sporting active, you may think the athletes are all too tired and just want to rest, but no Easter weekend is an Easter weekend without the evening socials. With 10.30 pm ticking by, numerous tipsy red faced Chinese students piled into the social held at The Break, Fever Club and The Stadium Bar. We would like to thank Kaans Catering for kindly donating the food and the Nanking Palace Restaurant for cooking the food to help sober up the intoxicated critters. The Vets tried to battle the youths with their socials at Robbie Burns Pub, Golden Harvest and the Dunedin Chinese Gardens.

Like Every year everyone really looks forward to the Ball on the Monday night. The Ball this year was held at the Otago Museum, this was a place where we all celebrated the good the bad and the ugly moments of the weekend. With a great meal catered to us by Sweet as a Nut, all the contingents were left content. As the time drew near when everyone said their goodbyes from new friendship and old friendships, enemies and allies, until next year when Easter will be held in Auckland, Adios amigos.

I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank Nicolle Wong, Laura Sew-Hoy, Frances Wong, Linus Chin plus all of OSCA organising committee for putting this event together. I am sure this Easter has brought us some wonderful moments which we will never forget. PEACE!!
