Men’s and Mixed Volleyball was played from Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th April at the Edgar Centre. Hawkes Bay beat OSCA in a very hard fought final in the “unofficial” Men’s competition taking the final set 25-21. The “official” Mixed competition had many highlights including one set in a qualifying match between Hawkes Bay and Wellington that was won 29-27 by Hawkes Bay (sets are won by the first team to reach 25 but must be won by a margin of 2 or more points). OSCA was also involved in an exciting tussle with Hawkes Bay and were edged 26-24 in the final set.

The OSCA team didn’t make the final, but did pretty well considering they were a young “scratch” team i.e. never played together as a team until the tournament.

Sadly, during the first set of the qualifying match against Wellington, Jay Wong of Hawkes Bay suffered a very bad fall, spent the night in hospital with a bad sprain and could not play again in the tournament.

The final proved a match too far for the tiring Hawkes Bay, with Wellington having the advantage of squad numbers, winning 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 23-9 to end a great tournament of exciting volleyball.
